The Institute is a non-profit organization that addresses the nature of
work and family life through finding research-based strategies that foster
connections among workplaces, families, and communities. Includes a link
to the Institutes Community Mobilization Forum.
U.S. Small Business Administration
Links to special programs and initiatives. The "Outreach" page contains
links to African American and Hispanic-specific initiatives.
SBA New Markets
Investment Fund
Link to an SBA news release on President Clintons announcement of
the Nations first SBA Venture Capital Company that is targeted to
low and moderate income areas.
National Urban League
Home page of the Urban League containing numerous links to programs and
initiatives related to economic self-sufficiency.
Neighborhoods Online
An online resource center created by the Institute for the Study of Civic
Values and LibertyNet. Contains links to information covering all aspects
of neighborhood revitalization. The "Jobs" link includes information related
to U.S. economic data, small business development, workforce development,
economic legislation and welfare reform.

Financial Institutions (CDFI)
Homepage to the U.S. Treasury Departments program which provides
funding for urban and rural economic revitalization.
Ford Foundation:
Asset Building & Community Development
"Connecting Capital Markets to Poor Communities," a report from the Ford
Foundation, summarizes a new approach that enlists the vast resources
of private financial institutions (banks, credit unions, loan funds, venture
capital funds) to spur community development.
Empowerment Zone/Enterprise Community
A Federal initiative that creates partnerships between Washington and
American communities that focuses on bottom-up revitalization of distressed
urban and rural areas. The efforts recognize that local residents know
best how to solve their neighborhoods problems.
Newark New
Community
An example of an initiative in Newark New Jersey that is committed to
creating new employment opportunities for area residents as well as to
bringing jobs, income and assets into Newark.
The Urban Institute
Web site of this nonpartisan economic and social policy research organization
which investigates social and economic problems confronting the nation
and looks at efforts to address these problems.
Poverty and
children
This article on child poverty by the Childrens Defense Fund of Minnesota
addresses how poverty affects childrens health, schoolwork, and
exposure to crime and how raising income reduces the problems.
Center for Civic Networking
The Center promotes best practices and policies that foster the public
use of information for community economic development, social service
delivery and participation in governance. The Center teams with civic,
non-profit, small business and government organizations to promote ways
to sustain healthy communities.

Survey of American Families
Findings from the 1997 survey of 44,461 households in 13 states focusing
mainly on health, income, job training and social services. Contains summaries
of state findings.
Alliance for Children and
Families
Link to the Alliances Ways to Work family loan program. The program
is a financial initiative that provides small loans to low-income parents
who cannot get loans elsewhere.

This website (Federal) provides numerous links to efforts and initiatives

Operation Hope
Web site for Operation Hope, a partnership of banking services in inner
city and under-served communities that promotes economic empowerment and
community revitalization. Through this site you can access the organizations
newsletter, "Empowering Communities."
Center for
Community Economic Development
"Community Indicator: Taking a Look at Your Community" provides a
starting point to begin discussion and identify opportunities and issues
that face your community. Also provides links to data resources and publications
on community economic development. The Center is housed at the University
of Wisconsin-Cooperative Extension.
Street Equity Network
This website provides a place for the exchange of ideas, tips, and information
for neighborhood entrepreneurs. Links include information on starting
your own business, creating a neighborhood equity and trust corporation,
and the opportunity to trade ideas and obtain advice from small business
owners.
